Ecological conservation methods in industry play an ever increasing role of importance. Consumers increasingly demand more sustainable products. Ecological environmental sustainability is becoming more and more a market requirement. Covestro recognised this development early on and proceeded to develop the Desmodur® eco N 7300 biomass-based curing agent for polyurethane (PUR) paints and adhesives. Thanks to this new award-winning development, manufacturers and users can significantly improve their carbon balance.

By means of this innovative development on the basis of biomass, Covestro has enabled its customers to manoeuvre successfully within a sustainability-characterised market environment. The product serves ever increasing customer requirements and opens up new market opportunities for applicators. Motor vehicle manufacturers, but also applicators and branded product distributors in other spheres of industry, are enabled to improve their carbon footprint along the value-added supply chain, and thus position themselves on the market as pioneers in sustainable working materials.

The underlying basis for the new biomass curing agent Desmodur® eco N 7300 is ‘PDI’ - pentamethylendiisocyanate. Its inherent carbon content is based as to 70 percent on biomass. The underlying base product for the development is the starch in a type of maize from a plant used for industrial and fodder purposes, and which is not destined for human consumption and is thus not in direct competition with foodstuffs production. As regards the resistance to weathering and scratching, toughness and processing facilities as well as compatibility with paints- and adhesives formulations, Desmodur® eco N 7300 achieves the level of conventional curing agents on petrochemical bases, and even exceeds these in certain applicatory properties.

An award-winning innovation: In April 2015 the world’s first bio-based cross linker for high-performance coatings in the car industry received the Innovation Award “Bio-based Material of the Year 2015”. The jury praised the performance of the product which is equal to that of petrochemical linkers.

Covestro is currently setting up a comprehensive technological platform and is investigating additional usages for PDI-based raw materials for paints, adhesives and for other applications. 2016 will be the year for the commercial manufacture of the new isocyanate with a capacity of up to 20,000 tonnes a year on existing plant and equipment. In this regard, Covestro is employing energy-efficient gas-phase technology.
Furthermore, suppliers of Covestro are already working today on the next biomass generation for the underlying ‘PDI’ primary product. Instead of fodder maize, the base will be cellulose and organic waste materials. This process is already in use for the production of organic ethanol.
