Excellent corrosion protection with polyurethane underbody coatings

When it comes to the underbodies of our cars, out of sight is often out of mind. That’s OK when a polyurethane underbody coating is applied. PU underbody coatings provide outstanding corrosion protection, even in locations with severe weather and excessive road debris.

Automotive underbody protection

Automotive underbodies get exposed to harsh conditions, including water, snow, salt, sand, gravel and other road debris.

Coatings used for automotive underbody protection are applied over the electrocoat (e-coat), so they must have extreme mechanical (stone chipping, scratching, etc.) and chemical resistance.

Covestro offers Desmodur® and Desmophen® one- (1K) and two- (2K) component PU systems for the formulation of automotive underbody coatings with outstanding underbody corrosion protection and stone chip resistance.

The 2K underbody coating systems offer the advantages of room temperature curing and a lower weight for increased energy/fuel efficiency and the ability to formulate coatings without plasticizers.

Desmodur® BL can also be used as a hardener for polyvinyl chloride (PVC) solvent-based automotive underbody coatings.

Automotive underbody paints based on PU feature an excellent combination of hardness and flexibility that provide the right mix of impact and abrasion resistance –
to meet the demands on … or off the road.
