Baybond® dispersions for glass fiber sizing

In the sizing process, individual glass filaments are drawn out, coated and combined into a single fiber. Sizing protects fibers against abrasion and breakage, and gives them product-specific characteristics, including stiffness, cutting properties and in the case of chopped strands, flow properties.

Today, many polyurethane-based glass fiber sizings are polyether and polyester dispersions based on aliphatic diisocyanates. Thanks to good compatibility with the plastic matrix, polyurethane sizings ensure very good adhesion and positively influence the reinforcing properties – such as impact strength, tensile strength and flexural strength – of the end product. Polyurethane-based glass fiber sizings are also stable to the shear forces that occur during the application process, have outstanding film-forming properties and are colorfast, even when exposed to heat.

Baybond® polyurethane dispersions from Covestro are waterborne polyurethane dispersions specifically developed for glass fiber sizings for the reinforcement of thermoplastics like polyamide 6 (PA 6), polyamide 6.6 (PA 6.6) and polybutylenterephthalate (PBT).

Glass-fiber-reinforced thermoplastics are often found in the automotive and electrical industries, with some of the binders used for glass fiber sizings also used to formulate sizings for carbon fibers.
