Building blocks for customized coatings
Prepolymers flexible yet precise in application
Prepolymers can be formulated as one- (1K) and two-component (2K) systems. As 1K, the product reacts with moisture. As 2K, it’s used the same way as a conventional polyisocyanate. This allows a more controlled reaction of the system due to the partial reaction of the isocyanate groups.
Prepolymers represent an intermediate level between traditional polyurethane coating raw materials like MDI, TDI or HDI based types and the finished coatings produced with these raw materials.
Core products from Covestro contain free isocyanate groups, allowing them to be used as NCO components in formulations of nonsolvent coating systems. This process permits the physical properties or the formulation behavior to be modified in a controlled, precise manner.
We offer a unique product portfolio for the manufacture of high-quality polyurethane coating systems, including our industry-leading Desmodur® and Mondur® lines .
Prepolymers in the Desmodur® E range are the reaction products of aromatic or aliphatic isocyanates/diisocyanates and polyols. They react to long chain, highly-resistant polymers, resulting in solid products with specific adjustable final properties like strength or chemical resistance. They can also be formulated to be either highly elastic or tough, depending on chemical structure.
Desmocap® prepolymers, meanwhile, are a special kind of ingredient that can be used in combination with epoxy systems to flexibilize coatings. The isocyanate groups are blocked, thus minimizing the reactivity of the product.
