Dispersion options for high-quality applications
Waterborne coatings benefit from air-drying dispersions
The crosslinking, curing and film properties of waterborne one-component (1K) polyurethane (PU) coatings are customizable based on the coating’s intended use. Covestro offers a series of air-drying PU dispersions that can be used for high-quality applications in general industrial metal as well as wood and parquet coatings.
Polyurethane dispersions modified with fatty acid units can be dried by reaction with atmospheric oxygen. Compared with other air-drying coatings, air-drying 1K coatings based on PU dispersions are characterized by their good physical properties, including abrasion resistance.
Oxidatively drying Bayhydrol® UH polyurethane dispersions are suitable to use as binders in primers and direct-to-metal applications. Due to their good film appearance they are also suitable to formulate topcoats for parquet wood applications.
The film properties are enhanced by crosslinking. This is achieved by oxidative drying under the catalytic influence of metal salts. These dispersions yield coatings with increased resistance to hydrolysis, good pigment wetting properties and high gloss. The resulting coatings are well-suited for use in the production of automotive accessories and components for agricultural and construction machinery.
